Ice Dam Warning

ICE DAM WARNING

With the forecast of snow and freezing temperatures ahead of us, it is possible for your roof to develop ice dams if preventative measures aren’t taken.

What Are Ice Dams?

A build-up of ice on roofs resulting from melting snow reaching the eave and freezing there is known as an Ice Dam.  This build-up blocks the melting water from draining off the roof.  This causes a backup which can lead to water infiltration into your home.  Shingled roofs are designed to shed water, not hold water.  When this happens due to ice damming, the damages to the home due to water infiltration are not covered by your warranty or home insurance.

A&D Exteriors always uses double the ice & water shield, which exceeds codes, on all our roof installations.  This is done for added protection, but can not stop water infiltration in rare or extreme conditions.  The high level of snow accumulation this winter paired with freezing cold temperatures is a perfect storm for ice damming.

What Can I Do To Prevent Ice Dams?

Remove The Snow.  Ice dams can’t form without snow, but do NOT do this by putting rock salt on your roof—unless you want to run the risk of discolored shingles and dead plants or grass.  Instead, try one of the following suggestions:

1) Use the product Roofmelt (available at local hardware stores) which is designed to melt through the ice to create relief points for drainage.  This allows trapped water to flow off the roof and not cause harm to roofing materials.

2) You can also purchase a Roof Rake from local stores to remove the snow from at least the lower-most section of your roof without damaging your shingles, just be sure to follow all instructions and safety procedures for use.

3) While this is not a service our company provides, we would also recommend using a professional snow removal service, like the Ice Dam GuysTheir website has great information regarding ice dams, how they form and tips to prevent them in the future.

Stay Safe.
  • NEVER climb on top of a snow covered roof.
  • NEVER use a roof rake when standing on a ladder.
  • NEVER try to remove any ice buildup yourself.
  • Be aware of possible falling hazards.

If you are unable to safely clear the snow yourself, you should call a professional to help.
